Here's another American coach abroad, albeit in the German 3rd division: <a href="http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=511925&root=us&cc=5901" rel="nofollow">Brent Goulet</a>.

Tico89 - Having spent time in Costa Rica during Sampson's time as US boss, I remember how well many Ticos liked him, mostly, it seemed because he spoke Spanish. I have to admit, though, that I too was surprised when he got the Costa Rica job. And, as you point out, he didn't do much to justify his selection to the job.

"Only one native-born American coach has held a major job abroad (Steve Sampson, who was in charge of Costa Rica’s national team from 2002 – 2004)"

And he should never, ever have got that job... It was utterly ridiculous, basically forcing out an extremely successful manager who got CR to the World Cup top in CONCACAF (Alexandre Guimaraes), to bring in Sampson, who had coached the USA team to 32nd in the World Cup...simply because the head of the CR Federation liked him and had wanted him for ages. I still can't believe that appointment, three and a half years after that Cuba game...

Dan Gaspar could be included in your list. He's been a GK coach all over the place and I believe he is from New England.

Unless the American coach has coached the US Nat's, or has dual citizenship, he cannot get a work permit in a foreign country.

Until the United States wins the World Cup or the MLS is taken seriously around the globe I can't see American coaches making a splash. Though Bob Bradley has a track record as a winner. If an American was to coach overseas I would put my money on him.
