Gringo en Mexico
For those of you waiting patiently for updates, there won’t be any until after Christmas. I’m currently taking part in a research project in Oaxaca, Mexico and won’t be posting until I return to Gringolandia.

It sounds like a very interesting project in a city that was in the news for much of the year. Is the city still occupied by protesters?
A question about migration that I have is whether the US’s stricter enforcement has made it riskier for migrants to return to Mexico, given that it may be much harder to come back. This could mean fewer visits back home and also fewer permanent returns. This could (and I’[m speculating) mean that undocumented immigration numbers would actually increase.

I’m a gringo who has lived in Oaxaca for 8 years and who enjoys very much your blog. If you want to know where the beer and the music are, or whatever, write me, it would be my pleasure to show you about.

Jason - That “reduced circularity” is exactly what my professor - Wayne Cornelius, an expert on migration - believes the current border build-up is doing. Far from eliminating illegal immigration, it is simply keeping the undocumented from returning home.
