I apologize for the lack of updates all last week. I was visiting UC San Diego, where I will be entering a PhD program in anthropology in the fall (part of my research will look at the role of soccer among Spanish-speaking immigrants in the US). Posting will resume as normal now.
By the way, if you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see me cover, please contact me. My email is david[at]cultureofsoccer.com (remove the [at] and replace it with @).

depressing topic, but i’m always interested in sports-related violence, in particular soccer. i’d like to learn what makes soccer so violent, but not other sports - or so it seems.
i’d like to know about soccer violence coming to america - when will it take off? are there cultural differences - violence in Italy vs. England vs. Netherlands vs. America - or is it all the same?
ultimately, what can we do to reduce soccer violence, and maybe use soccer to decrease violence in general?
pipe dream, maybe, but…

Peter - Excellent idea. I’ll see if I can look into it. Unfortunately, I do have a memory of some crowd trouble in the US, at a DC United game against the Red Bulls (or maybe it was still during the Metrostars era), so we’re not immune to that disease.
