Susan - Morris does not touch on the practice of children accompanying players on to the field. To my knowledge, it's a relatively new practice. I can only think of it happening in the past 5 or so years.

I do remember that MasterCard ad from the 2002 World Cup! It was wonderful. Should have mentioned it in my original post. Oh well.

And I have many regrets about procrastinating and watching other people take my ideas, so no worries there (I should have written the book National Pastime: How Americans Play Baseball And the Rest of the World Plays Soccer, for example). When someone else writes what you intended to, at least it means you have an idea that's resonating with others.

David,
Thanks so much for this terrific essay! I must admit to a fair amount of jealousy because soccer rituals were the sort of thing that I intended to cover in my blog, but I'm a great procrastinator and never got around to it. I wouldn't have done such a fine job, in any case. I find the soccer rituals that you wrote about to be all quite endearing, to use your expression. I am curious about how the practice of children accompanying players onto the field evolved--did Morris touch on that? And I adore the shirt swap--do you remember an ad campaign (used by Mastercard, maybe?) in the 2002 World Cup that showed people in various professions swapping articles of clothing, with the Ramones version of "What a Beautiful World" as background? Like French waiters at competing cafes swapping aprons. Anyway, I admire your blog, which I just discovered via throughball.com. Keep up the nice work.
