This article is trying to relate Athletic Club with the whole basque country and with nationalism, well this is completely wrong. Athletic existed and became an esential part of Bilbao (not the whole basque country) long before the short minded nationalism started spreading widely in the basque country, and only in the last years of democracy when Nationalism has become almost an exclusive religion for the some basques, has the link with Athletic Club been created. Athletic is one of the main things that unite both nationalistic and non nationalistic basques from Bilbao. But only those from Bilbao, since you will notice that people from the neighbour provinces of Guipuzcoa (San Sebastian) and Alava (Vitoria) will reject strongly any link with Athletic Club, actually the rivalry (sometimes exagerated) is the major feeling. Hope this first hand opinion from someone from Bilbao will share some light over some of the confussion in this page. A part from that thanks for speacking about us and AUPA ATHLETIC!!! ;-)

[...] Athletic Bilbao represents that city in Spain. They also see themselves as representing the entire Basque region and as such only use Basque players (there have been some exceptions, click here for more information). [...]
